Healthy Snacks: Healthier Alternatives for Unhealthy Favorites

I love snacking just like anybody else.  Chips and salsa, CARBS, Diet Cokes, and sweet treats are my vice.  After finally realizing that I could work out all day yet still not make any progress toward reaching my fitness goals due to what I was eating, I decided to make some permanent changes.

Calorie tracking program I use from BodyMedia. Helps me keep a balanced diet and stay on track.

80% of your progress comes from your nutrition and 20% comes from working out (I learned this from a little book called PUSH).

I’ve therefore made a conscious effort to eat cleaner with the help of Beachbody’s Ultimate Reset program, and as a result have been on a mission to replace many of my unhealthy snacks with healthier alternatives that are surprisingly satisfying!

Healthy Alternatives for the Salty, Crunchy Munchies

Baby Carrots/Cucumber Chips for Tortilla Chips and Salsa – While salsa isn’t bad for you, and tortilla chips are all right on occasion, this was a complete addiction for me.  Weird, but I realized a lot of it had to do with the act of “dipping.”  So, I replaced this daily habit with veggies and hummus.

Baby carrots are great, but my favorite is thinly sliced pieces of cucumber sprinkled with a little Himalayan salt.  It satisfies the salty, crunchy craving.  I prefer to dip in different flavors of hummus, but you could definitely do salsa, too.

All-Natural Pop Chips for Greasy Potato Chips – I recently discovered Pop Chips because of people posting about them on Instagram, and I’m HOOKED!  While the alternative above is probably a healthier choice, Pop Chips are a great replacement for

These are AWESOME and crazy addictive. Warning: Don't eat from the bag!

almost any kind of chip and they definitely help curb your carb cravings.  You can find them at Target grocery stores, Trader Joes, and Whole Foods.

Pop Chips are all-natural, popped slices of potato (never baked or fried).  My FAVORITE is the barbeque flavor – tastes just like BBQ potato chips.  The regular kind tastes like your typical potato chip.

I love that you can have about 20 chips for just 120 calories and about 4g of fat, so it’s a satisfying snack.  However, I highly recommend NOT eating from the bag.  Remove a serving, and put the bag away, or you WILL eat the entire bag all at once… not joking!

My Favorite Healthy Sweet Treats

I LOVE COOKIES!…and cakes…and anything else made with sugar.  If I didn’t get something to satisfy my sweet tooth, I found myself picking at a bunch of junk I didn’t even want in an attempt to curb the craving.  So, I found a few sweet indulgences that are far better for me than cookies…

Dark chocolate – Just a few dark chocolate Hershey Kisses are so rich that you won’t need anything else.  Plus, dark chocolate is full of antioxidants and free of all the processed junk you find in other desserts.

Fruit and Light Whip – Fruit (especially strawberries) are sooo good dipped in whipped cream.  Heck, ANYTHING is good dipped in whipped cream.  Get light or fat free whip to save yourself the calories and fat, and keep this treat on the healthy side.  There are also organic versions available.

Shakeology No-Bake Cookies – The chocolate flavored Shakeology is very sweet and rich.  You can use all natural ingredients to make a yummy no-bake cookie with your Shakeology that is a great protein snack/dessert and a replacement for brownies. Click here for the recipe.

No More Sugary Drinks

I had a serious Diet Coke addiction until I completed the Ultimate Reset cleanse.  I thought because it was “diet” and had no

calories, that it was okay for me.  But there’s still so much bad stuff in diet soda.

After finishing the Ultimate Reset, I ordered a Diet Coke as a treat while out to eat, and was amazed at how overwhelmingly sweet it actually is.  But, I also realize that having fizzy drinks like this helps keep me from unnecessary snacking.

I found an AWESOME replacement for soda: flavored seltzer water.  I know most people already know about sparkling water, but Seagram’s Naturally Flavored Orange Citrus Sparking Seltzer Water tastes so much like orange pop! My Diet Coke addiction has been replaced!
